Xello is looking for a Backend Engineer to help build and support the backend services, APIs, and data-intensive systems that power our content management workflows and product experiences.
Who are you?
You’re an experienced backend engineer who enjoys solving problems with clean architecture, reliable systems, and strong data design. In this role, you’ll build and support backend services, APIs, and data-intensive systems that power Xello’s content management workflows and product experiences.
You have a strong understanding and passion for data modelling, and are skilled in both database and backend development and performance tuning. You are also adept at interface-based programming, with a proven track record of writing testable code.
Working as part of Xello’s development team in an agile environment, you’ll collaborate with Product Managers, the content team and engineering leadership to solve problems for external clients and internal stakeholders.
You care about clean architecture, testable code, reliable systems, and thoughtful data design. You are curious, methodical, and eager to contribute to Xello’s culture of innovation, excellence, and accountability.

What you’ll do…
- Build and maintain CMS-related systems that support structured content, internal workflows, publishing, and product experiences.
- Collaborate in technical discussions and feature design, tackling both open-ended problems and well-defined implementation work.
- Model, query, and optimize relational data to support performance, scalability, maintainability, and data integrity.
- Take ownership and responsibility for successful delivery of features.
- Participate in code reviews and mentoring to onboard and level up other engineers, encourage best practices, and improve code quality.
- Contribute to improvements in development processes, unit testing, integration testing, build processes, and engineering standards.
- Research and evaluate technologies or approaches that could improve Xello’s products and engineering practices.
- Recommend implementation strategies that balance technical quality, maintainability, and delivery needs
- Actively participate in scrum ceremonies.
- Self-manage assigned work within given timelines in an agile environment.
What we’re looking for…
Must haves
- 3+ years of experience developing backend solutions for large-scale software applications.
- Strong hands-on experience in SQL and backend coding.
- Knowledge of data modeling, normalization, interface-based development, design patterns, and dependency injection.
- Solid understanding of the .Net Framework, up to and including v6.
- Strong experience with C#, .NET/.NET Core, SQL Server, web applications, APIs, REST, and web services.
- Proficiency with SQL profiling, execution plans, C# code profiling, and other performance-analysis tools.
- Knowledge and experience using SOLID and DRY principles.
- Thorough understanding of unit and integration testing, as well as test-driven development (TDD).
- Self-directed and organized, with the ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple projects and tasks of varying complexity.
- Methodical approach to problem-solving, with a keen eye for detail.
- Curiosity and passion for continually learning and sharing knowledge with others.
- Experience with GIT version control.
- Experience with Angular.
- Knowledge and experience developing using Azure cloud services.
- Experience supporting performance, reliability, or scalability improvements in production systems.
